I will not go into technicalities, but Google.com automatically reads through your website, determines its major keywords, and then displays ads related to the content of your website. You are paid each time someone clicks on any of the adverts displays on your website - these types of adverts are called Pay Per Click (PPC) advertisements. For example, it the central theme of your website is 'NIGERIA' then the AdSense adverts displayed on your site will be exactly targeted to Nigerians. You can register for Google AdSense at www.google.com/adsense.
Beautifully, you do not even need your own website to start earning from AdSense - you can do so with a free website or a free blog. You can start your own blog at http://www.blogger.com/ - it is also owned by Google.com. Google pays you at the end of every month when the AdSense revenue from your blog or website has gotten to $100.
N.B: Do not be fooled into thinking you can repeatedly click on you ownadverts to make money - google will eventually find out and ban you from their network. Once you are banned, you stay banned!
